Adonia water heater
Product, UX, 2015-16
Havells is the market leader in Fast Moving Electronic Goods (FMEGs) in the Indian market. We designed a range of switches, and a line of geysers for the company in 2015-16. The geysers were successfully launched in Malaysia and India in July 2016, and have since expanded to other markets across SE Asia.
The design was awarded the India Design Mark in 2017 - India's highest recognition of design excellence.
UX innovation in Product design
The design of the Adonia range of water heaters for Havells deals with an important and hitherto overlooked usability issue - how to indicate water temperature. Geysers the world over use Green/Red lights for this purpose, which can confuse users because of their loaded semantic messages - Go/Stop or Safe/Danger being used to indicate Cold/Hot.
Our user experience innovation was to use a ring of LED lights on the product fascia to show a colour transition from cool blue to deep red, intuitively indicating the gradual heating of the water within. This principle is a world first for water heaters and has been patented by the client.
Temperature controls
Touch-sensitive controls on the digital model and a knob on the manual one allow for easy and safe setting of the desired custom temperature as per one’s personal preference, even with wet hands. This feature will protect against sudden exposure to water at very high temperatures.
Form development
The form of the outer shell was specially designed to maximize the available volume for thermal insulation - Double PUF insulation. This gives 40% more saving on power bills and keeps water hot for a much longer time. The challenge was to gain the great possible volume without adding visual bulk to the product.
Rapid access panel design - The fascia form and assembly is designed for quick and easy access without needing to open the entire body - making repair quick and easy.
